Setting the Foundation for a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child's first visit to an orthodontist by age seven, and at Pendleton Orthodontics, we agree. This early evaluation allows Dr. Ryan Pendleton to identify and address potential issues before they become more complex, setting the stage for a lifetime of optimal oral health through early orthodontics.
This initial stage of treatment is often called Phase I, or interceptive orthodontics. It's designed to work with a child's natural growth to guide jaw development, make room for permanent teeth, and correct bite problems. Addressing these concerns early can often simplify or even eliminate the need for more extensive treatment later on.
Signs Your Child May Benefit from an Orthodontic Evaluation
During your child’s complimentary consultation, Dr. Pendleton will look for subtle signs of developing orthodontic problems. It's a good idea to schedule a visit if you notice any of the following:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing or tongue thrusting habits
- Thumb sucking after age five
- Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
- Jaws that shift, make sounds, or seem out of proportion to the face
- Teeth that don’t meet at all or meet in an abnormal way
The Benefits of Interceptive Orthodontics
Early orthodontic treatment offers significant advantages for your child's future dental health and well-being. By intervening at the right time, we can:
- Correct and guide the growth of your child's jaw to help permanent teeth come in straight.
- Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches.
- Create more space for crowded teeth.
- Avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions later in life.
- Correct thumb-sucking and help improve minor speech problems.
- Reduce the complexity and duration of future orthodontic care.

Early Orthodontics Reviews
We are just starting our journey with Pendleton, but so far I am very happy. I haven't had a personal experience with an orthodontist since the 90s, so I am blown away at the technology and how much easier the steps to a healthy bite and smile have become. My daughter medical anxiety that has interfered with our ability to do basic well visits let alone dentist appointments and to be honest, I had no expectations of moving beyond the initial consult. I just wanted to know what I needed to try to prepare her for because I knew she would need some intervention. When I tell you that the staff have gone out of their way to help her feel safe and quell her fears, I mean it! Maggie has called before appointments to go over things with me so that my child doesn't have to hear anything that might trigger her and has made notes to help the rest of the staff be aware of our needs.Maisy is amazing and friendly and even adjusted the room temp for our first proceeedure visit so my child was just that much more comfortable. The people, in tandem with the speed the technology they utilize allows, have made it possible for us not to delay an adjustment that my daughter needs and I am amazed. They have plenty of 3d models and videos to help explain everything well that my kids were able to explain to thier dad exactly what everything meant when we got home from thier consultation. We are at the very beginning but so far I believe we've made a great choice with Pendleton.
Everyone in the office is nice and profficient at what they do and they use the newest technology. Definitely recommend Dr Pendleton.
I am almost at the end of my service for having braces. Dr. P and his staff are friendly, down to earth, and musically inclined people! They enjoy their career and have fun doing so, which makes it an atmosphere of them taking really good care of their clients! Both economically affordable-as he doesn’t charge for things you do not need. He has up to date technology and again he and his staff are super cool. I would recommend this Doc before any other Ortho.

Frequently Asked Questions About Early Orthodontics
What is the ideal age for my child to see an orthodontist?
We recommend an initial consultation around age seven. By this age, most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth, which allows Dr. Pendleton to spot developing issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth while they are still treatable.
Will my child need braces if they have early treatment?
The goal of interceptive orthodontics is to address significant problems early to make future treatment simpler. Some children may not need any further treatment. However, most will still require a second phase of treatment (like braces or Invisalign) once all their permanent teeth have come in to finalize their alignment and bite.
Is early orthodontic treatment expensive?
At Pendleton Orthodontics, we work to make all treatment affordable. We offer flexible, 0% interest financing options and will help you maximize any insurance benefits you may have. Investing in early treatment can also prevent more costly and complex procedures in the future.
