Protecting Your Smile With Retainers

You’ve put in the time and effort to reach your smile goals, and we want to make sure those results last a lifetime. At Pendleton Orthodontics, we know that finishing your braces or Invisalign® treatment is a huge milestone. Retainers are the "insurance policy" that keeps your teeth exactly where they belong.

Think of your retainer as the final, vital step of your journey. Since teeth have a "memory" and naturally will to shift back to their previous positions, wearing your retainer ensures your investment in your oral health is protected forever.

Every smile is unique, so we offer a few different ways to keep your teeth in place. Together, we’ll choose the one that fits your lifestyle best:

  • Vivera™ Retainers: These clear retainers look just like Invisalign aligners. They are nearly invisible and fit snugly over your teeth, making them a popular, discreet choice.
  • Fixed (Bonded) Retainers: This is a thin, custom wire bonded behind your front teeth. You can't see it, and you don't have to worry about forgetting to wear it!
  • Hawley Retainers: These sturdy retainers are constructed of a thin metal wire and a durable acrylic base.

Healthy smiles are created through our thoughtful treatment approach, and they stay healthy with a little daily care.

  • Keep It Clean: Gently clean your removable retainer every day using a soft toothbrush and mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste.
  • Watch the Heat: Never use hot water to clean your retainer, as it can warp the plastic and ruin the fit.
  • "If It's Not in Your Face, It's in the Case": This is our favorite rule! Always store your retainer in its protective case so it doesn't get tossed in the trash or chewed by a curious pet.
  • Floss with Care: If you have a fixed retainer, we’ll show you how to use a floss threader to keep the area around the wire clean and healthy.

I have known Dr. Ryan since 2016 when he assessed me for braces, and I began wearing Invisalign. My teeth and overbite needed a lot of correction, and he did a wonderful job. Today, I am still wearing retainers keeping my teeth in great shape! I still consult with Dr. Ryan when I need to reorder the Vivera retainers and to make sure that my teeth are still straight and beautiful. Thank you, Dr. Pendleton for giving me a smile I can be proud of!

Had a last minute issue with very old retainers. Unlike 5 other Orthodontic places I called these people were friendly, inviting and worked around that I left my wallet at home even during their busy hours. Left with a repair feeling good.Honestly a place I dont feel like a customer vs a place where I feel at home despite it being scarry teeth stuff. 10/10 thanks!

Dr. Ryan and his staff have been amazing during our sons 4 year plan of braces, retainers, etc. Certainly will recommend them to everyone we know and if needed, our daughter will go too!

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

For the first few months, you’ll likely wear your retainer around the clock. Once Dr. Pendleton sees that your smile is stable, you’ll transition to wearing it only at night while you sleep. To keep your teeth straight forever, wearing your retainer is a lifelong commitment.

What happens if I lose my retainer?

Don’t wait! If your retainer goes missing or breaks, call our Leander office immediately. Teeth can start to shift surprisingly quickly. Getting a replacement promptly is much easier and more affordable than needing treatment all over again.

Can I eat with my retainer in?

It’s best to take your removable retainer out before eating or drinking anything other than plain water. This prevents damage to the wire, keeps the plastic from getting stained, and avoids trapping sugar against your teeth.

How do I know if I need a new one?

Over time, retainers can wear out. If you notice cracks, if the plastic feels stretched and loose, or if you see calcium buildup that won't come off, it’s time for a fresh one. We recommend bringing your retainer to your regular check-ups so we can make sure it’s still doing its job.
